On Thursday, September 28, Ukraine was elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA website reports.
In total, 11 countries were elected to the IAEA Board of Governors, consisting of 35 members, for the period 2023-2024. The elections were held on Thursday, September 28, at the plenary session of the 67th IAEA General Conference.
Along with Ukraine, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Paraguay and Spain became newly elected members of the Council.
For the period 2023-2024, the new composition of the IAEA Board of Directors, consisting of 35 members, will be as follows: Australia, Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Great Britain, Armenia, Germany, Denmark, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Spain, Canada, Qatar, Kenya, China, Costa Rica, Republic of Korea, Namibia, Netherlands, South Africa, Paraguay, russian federation, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, USA, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Finland, France and Japan.
The Board of Governors is one of the two governing bodies of the IAEA, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States.
The Chairman of the Board in 2022-2023 is the representative of the Czech Republic, Mr. Ivo Sramek. He succeeds Mr. Ham Sangwook, a former manager from the Republic of Korea. The Deputy Chairmen are Mr. Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte from Brazil and Mr. Eoin O'Leary from Ireland.
We will remind that in previous years Ukraine was represented in the Board of Governors by Mykola Shteinberg and Yurii Nedashkovskyi. Currently, according to experts, Ukraine will be represented by the head of the permanent representation of Ukraine at international organizations in Vienna, Yevhenii Tsimbalyuk.
In addition, yesterday the IAEA General Conference adopted a resolution on Ukraine, the draft of which was submitted by Canada, Costa Rica, Finland and Singapore. The High Assembly, in particular, once again called for "the urgent withdrawal of all unauthorized military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhzhia NPP of Ukraine and the immediate return of the plant to the full control of the competent authorities of Ukraine in accordance with the existing license issued by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, in order to ensure its safe and reliable operation, as well as for the Agency to be able to carry out safe, efficient and effective application of guarantees in accordance with the Agreement on Comprehensive Guarantees of Ukraine and the Additional Protocol thereto". The General Conference also fully supported the continued provision by the Agency, upon request, of technical support and assistance to Ukraine in order to promote the safe and reliable operation of nuclear installations and activities related to radioactive sources, including the continued physical presence of IAEA technical experts at Chornobyl, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants. And called on member states to provide political, financial and in-kind support to the IAEA's comprehensive program of technical support and assistance to Ukraine, including by providing the necessary equipment to ensure nuclear and physical security at the request of Ukraine.
